In Juli hatten wir einen tollen Abend mit „special guests": DerElligh, die keltische Musik auf einer Vielfalt von Instrumenten gespielt und dabei auch sehr harmonisch gesungen haben. Als „Floor Spots“ hatten wir „Mr Piano" Gerhard Haug und sowohl keltische als böhmische Harfen von Mary and Resia, toll gespielt, die ein Lied sogar auf schwedisch gesungen haben.

Langsam, aber sicher, nimmt der Folk Club eine richtige Gestalt an - Barry und ich brauchten kaum was zu tun. Vielen Dank dafür an alle für eure schöne musikalischen Einsätze! Ihr seit alle als Wiederholungstäter gerne willkommen.

Wenn alle Sachen gleich bleiben, geht es am ersten Freitag in September am 03.09.2010 in Graurheindorf weiter. Fest angekündigt an der Violine ist Christine Moos, die im ersten Set bei einigen Liedern von Jonathan Ole Wales Rogers mich begleiten wird, und hoffentlich auch etwas darüber hinaus spielen wird.„Mike und der Doktor“ die in Mai so erfolgreich aufgetreten sind, daß sie zwei Zugaben für einen Floor Spot bekam, haben sich angekündigt ihr Versprechen einzulösen und als „Special Guests“ aufzutreten. Hoffentlich klappt dies in September, wenn andere Termine es zulassen. Hier nochmal die Mai Rezession zur Erinnerung :

Vielleicht spielt sogar John Hurd von Bonn English Network in September? Zumindest hat er nun einen neuen Satz Gitarrensaiten bekommen, und damit keine Ausrede mehr! In der zwischen Zeit hat er mich eingeladen etwas Blues in Bonn anzuhören. Es ging zwar etwas lauter zu als im Folk Club, war aber ein schönes Erlebnis:

Also, wenn Ihr singen und/oder spielen wollt, kommt bitte etwas früher, um einen Auftritt zu sichern und um Enttäuschungen zu meiden. Auch wenn Ihr nicht spielen oder singen möchtet, kommt ohnehin etwas früher, da die besten Plätze am schnellsten weg sind.

ENGLISH
We had a super evening in July with “DerElligh” as special guests, who played Celtic music on a variety of instruments with harmonious vocal accompaniments. As floor spots we had “Mr Piano” Gerhard Haug masterfully tickling the Ivories and a duet comprising a Celtic and a Bohemian Harp elegantly played by Mary & Resia who even sang a song in Swedish.

Slowly, but surely, the Folk Club is taking on proper shape and stature, so that Barry and I hardly had to do anything. Many thanks to everyone for your wonderful musical contributions! You are all most welcome to return.

When all things are equal, which they seldom are, we shall meet again on the first Friday in September on the 3rd September in Graurheindorf. Christine Moos has volunteered to accompany me on the violin for a selection of songs from Jonathan Ole Wales Rogers in the first set and hopefully some other tunes on top. ”Mike and the Doctor” has been in touch to honour their promise to do a Special Guest spot and hopefully this will be in September when their other commitments allow. Those who were there in May will remember that they did such a successful floor spot that they received two encores, and if you weren’t there you can check it out on John Hurd’s review of the May meet:

Perhaps John Hurd of the Bonn English Network might do a spot in September! At least he is now in possession of a new set of guitar strings, and so has no excuse left! In the meantime he invited me to accompany him to listen to some Blues in Bonn by three guitarists. It was somewhat louder that in the folk club but still a wonderful experience:

So if you want to come and sing and play in September, do come along a little earlier in order to assure a spot and avoid disappointment. Even if you don’t want to sing or play yet, and are just coming along to listen, it’s as well to come early too, as the best ringside seats are the ones which go first.

Folk Club 6 - coming up the 9th of July

ACHTUNG! – Terminänderung 9ten Juli statt 2ten Juli

Wir sind der Fußball WM zur Leid gefallen, deren Viertelfinalen am 2ten Juli stattfinden, dem ersten Freitag im Juli. So kommt wenn ihr wollt in den Saal am 2ten um den Fußball an der Großleinwand zu bestaunen. Aber wenn Ihr Musik hören möchtet, haben wir den Folk Club um eine Woche, auf den zweiten Freitag im Juli, dem 9ten verschoben. Also falsches Datum aber am gleichen Ort und zur gleichen Zeit.

Um sich daran zu erinnern wie gut es im Juni war, oder zu sehen was ihr verpaßt habt, gibt es eine exzellente Rezension (von jemandem, der weiß was Folk Clubs in sich haben), und auch einige tolle Bilder von John Hurd von dem „Bonn English Network“ :

Der Folk Club wird am Freitag, den 9. Juli, zum sechsten Mal im Schützenhaus stattfinden. Er wird wie die anderen fünf Male um 19:30 anfangen. Es sieht wieder nach einem guten Abend aus, mit einigen talentierten Floor Spots die sich schon angemeldet haben.
Außerdem freuen wir uns riesig auf die Gruppe „DerElligh“ als „special guests“ am 9ten zu gewinnen, die traditionelle Musik, unter anderem, aus den keltischen Rändern meiner Heimatinseln spielen. Also freuen wir uns jetzt schon darauf! Vor allem ich, weil sie scheinen Geiger und Querflöte mit im Gepäck zu haben.

Wir werden eine breite Reihe von Liedern haben, unter anderem über einen Gartenzwerg, der Kopfhörer trägt und die Knochen von schwarzen Katzen frißt, und eine wahre komische Verwechslungsgeschichte zwischen einem Bibliotheksangestellten aus Grimsby und der Frau eines Pfandverleihers und eine unwahre erfundene aber lustige Ballade von Rudyard Kipling von 1880 über einen Heliographer in den Bergen von Hurrum, die die afghanische Grenze überblicken, und das ohne die Überraschungen, die Barry auf Lager bereit hält zu nennen!

Also, wenn Ihr singen und/oder spielen wollt, kommt bitte etwas früher, um einen Auftritt zu sichern und um Enttäuschungen zu meiden. Auch wenn Ihr nicht spielen oder singen möchtet, kommt ohnehin etwas früher, da die besten Plätze am schnellsten weg sind.

An Alle: Wenn ihr ganz, ganz, ganz früh (ein Woche vorher) kommt, könnt ihr sogar WM zuschauen! Aber bitte dann Acht auf verlorene Folkclubbers geben, und notfalls befreunden und die neue Termin weitersagen! Bitte nicht vergessen Monika!

ENGLISH

ATTENTION ! –change of date July 9th instead of July 2nd

Well we’ve fallen foul of the football world championship, the quarter finals of which take place on the 2nd July, which is the first Friday in July. So by all means come along to the hall on the 2nd and watch the football on the big screen, but if you want to hear some music we’ve postponed the folk club until the second Friday in July, on the 9th. So wrong date but – same time, same place.

So the July folk club, the sixth one, belated though it may be, looks like being another good evening. We won’t know by then who are yet to be the world champions in the soccer tournament, but we will know it will be one of only two teams remaining. Most people will probably have watched enough football by then to last them for the next four years. The chances are though that one of them will be Germany. Who was it who said that football was invented by the English so that 22 men could kick a ball around a pitch for ninety minutes in the constant presence of a referee so that in the end Germany could win?

Back to the music, it looks like being another varied and eventful evening -we have several talented floor spots already noted down (including our selfless apolitical piano tuner who has caused great pleasure indirectly to all of us but especially directly to Barry and Günter, our ivory evergreens) and we will be featuring as “special guests” the local group “DerElligh” playing traditional folk music mainly from the Celtic fringes of the British Isles. So my wishes of wanting to hear both a fiddle and a flute in the room seem to have finally been granted and we’ll certainly be looking forward to that, we will!

We will be featuring a wide range of songs during the evening covering, amongst other things, a garden gnome who wears headphones (please don’t forget them Barry!) and eats black cats’ bones and a truly comical misunderstanding between a librarian from Grimsby and a pawn broker’s “trouble and strife” and a fictional ballad from Rudyard Kipling about a heliographer ( that’s an old green form of solar powered “Instant Messaging” very popular in the 19th century) in the Hurrum Hills overlooking the Afghanistan border in 1880 and that’s without all the ace’s that Barry’s got up his sleeve!

So if you want to sing and play, do come early to secure a spot and avoid disappointment, and if you don’t want to sing and/or play, come early too as the ringside seats go the soonest and I’m afraid it’s not possible to do reservations.

If you come really, really, really early ( like a week ) you can perhaps make friends and meet with some disappointed folk clubbers who haven’t received the message or the Gospel yet and watch the soccer quarter finals and have a beer with them sans music- but don’t forget to tell them to come back a week later!

Here are a few fotos I made on an evening that seemed as if it was going to be a bit lonesome. But, the audience trickled in and the musicians worked just as hard as if there had been a crowd of thousands.
