TRUE NORTH – JOHNNY CAMPBELL (SUBVERSIVE FOLK RECORDS)

John Hurd of 3SongsBonn is not only a wonderful photographer, an unrivalled chronicler in English  of the most important musical events in the Bonn area and beyond, and as well as being an avid fan of Bonn folk club and often also a performer there, he also somehow finds time to review CDs and albums of performing artists. His latest one is a gem and features Johnny Campbell's latest musical issue "True North", which as the name implies is an in depth appraisal of the folk music tradition of the north of England.

Johnny Campbell played at FCB # 139 in October 2023 and played such a blinder that he is returning again as a "featured artist"  in October 2024, which will allow you to purchase his new CD then, or if you can't wait you can always order one direct from Johnny's webpage:

As a historical geographer and an ardent supporter of folk music, who was a citizen of the city of Derby (of Derby ram fame) before moving to Germany, I find Johnny Campbell a veritable breath of fresh air on the folk scene. "English folk" has often played second fiddle to more well known genres of folk music from Ireland and Scotland emanating from the British Isles. Johnny trail blazingly reminds us what a very rich lode of folk music treasure lies almost untapped, but certainly neglected, within England itself and particularly in the north of England where the seeds of the industrial revolution first took root to later provide for unprecedented economic growth on a truly global scale.

Many thanks to Johnny Campbell for taking the time and trouble to dig deeply into this tradition and present the musical history in such a fresh and compelling way with his new CD "True North",  and thanks also to John Hurd of 3SongsBonn for drawing our attention to it.
