Well dear folkies, what a folk club that was, there was not one chair left in the green room, nor in the restaurant next door, and there were still people standing in the hallowed hall where the Bonn folk club meets on the first Friday every month. After the amazing floor spot in October by Ismael de Barcelona & Thomas Monnerjahn we should have perhaps foreseen the interest in hearing this amazing, flamenco meets jazz, duo again. So sorry to anyone who did not find a seat and had to contend with standing room only.
Second up on the evening was a delightful set by Caroline Bernotat
Our Mexican friend Miguel Garcia González then regaled us with some traditional Spanish songsThe fourth performer of the evening and with Andreas Kulik we were already on our third language of the evening. Andrea was scheduled to play in December but as always in the folk club, "aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben!" Several people asked me somewhat perplexed, "What language is he singing in?" That's the beauty of Bonn Folk Club being located in such a beautiful cosmopolitan city!
Ismael de Barcelona and our old friend Thomas Monnerjahn
After the break and the opportunity to open the windows, and allow some necessary fresh air into the room one of our regular contributors from Cologne, Gerd Schinkel, treated us to three songs by Joaquin Sabina, who is virtually unknown in northern Europe but a superstar in the Spanish-speaking world. Gerd has actually translated and re-worked twenty of Joaquin's many songs into German.
What a wonderful evening that was and a special warm thanks to Ismael & Thomas for making it thus!
