SONGS, SINGERS AND SURPRISES – FOLK CLUB #144 Review by John Hurd of 3SongsBonn

 John Hurd of 3SongsBonn was present at last week's folk club in Bonn, and it was certainly a stonking great evening with a full crowd despite the vast majority of local transport services being on strike and not running, Despite, or perhaps because of, this, everyone seemed to be quietly but resolutely determine to do their very best to make it a great evening, for themselves and for everyone else, and this they certainly achieved. A big thanks to all of our wonderful performers and another special thanks to our magnificent audience who form the attentive and appreciative deep pile rug for the first Friday of the month musical magic carpet ride that is Folk Club Bonn!

SONGS, SINGERS AND SURPRISES  – FOLK CLUB #144

and even see great parts of it here:

Surprise even for me, on FCB  #144 night were a couple of "walk-ins" which we were not expecting,
but turned out to be well worth being surprised by, the English duo "Butterfly Moon" comprising Gareth Price-Baghurst and Ash (Ashleigh) Edwards.

There was certainly a whole lot of passion in Ash's voice and Gareth was no slouch on the fretboard!

Well, one of the roles of a folk club is to offer travelling musicians who are just passing through where your folk club happens to be, but, who live far enough away to definitely, not be able to return next month, a spot, in this case, a floor spot, at short notice, in order that they may play that very day. It is a very old unwritten tradition, and one that I myself have taken advantage on many occasions when travelling in the UK. During C-19 we had to cancel many folk club meetings due to social distancing regulations and it is only recently that we have finally worked through the backlog of wishing performers at the folk club. Giving this couple a walk-in spot on the Friday evening was certainly something that no one present in the audience would dispute was a shrewd move.

For the uninitiated here is Barry's original definition of a "Walk-in" which you can find here under FAQs on the blog;

QUOTE
What is a Walk-In?
Walk-In is someone who we have never had on the programme before, who walks in and says they want to do a Floor Spot. They have priority and almost always get to play. (Even if some of the planned spots have to be postponed or shortened.)

So for performers, this is one of the reasons why you never received a guaranteed number of songs on an evening,
such as 2-3 songs,  instead of three songs. This allows us the opportunity, albeit rarely used, to shorten your performance on an evening, if the need should arise, for whatever reason. It's nothing personal, it just gives us the flexibility to make each evening as wonderful and memorable as humanly possible.

So a shout out now to Monica!  Who ever and where ever she is. All we know is her name and the fact that she is a lady with short hair and we do not think that she was present at FCB # 144 in March.   Well, dear Monica do come along to FCB # 145 in April and collect your prize of a year's free admission to Bonn folk club for your sterling efforts in introducing Butterfly Moon to us. You spotted Gareth and Ash busking in Bonn city centre on Friday morning of the 01.03.24 and you were sufficiently impressed and told them with such conviction, that whatever they did, they should contact Folk Club Bonn, that was meeting the very same evening. This they duly did, and the rest, as they say, "is history".
