Dear Folkies,
this is an issue that Bonn Folk Club and Daniel Bongart and myself have personally taken issue with in the past on several occasions. Bonn is unfortunately probably the worst city in the whole of Germany, and possibly Europe, for its restrictions on musicians playing music freely on the very streets of our beautiful city, which were once walked upon by one of the world's most famous musicians.
Musicians, in order to develop, need to practise, and need to try out new ideas. There is a multitude of competent musicians living in Bonn and the surrounding areas and it is not only a great shame, but a great tragedy, that these people, who have developed and honed, their not inconsiderable skills, often at great cost to the city of Bonn, through its many renown music conservatories, acadamies and schools, that they cannot freely do so.
Many people argue that musicians, who are also human beings, should enjoy a right to play on the streets in their neighbourhoods, as a basic human freedom. (Please discuss below if you wish?)
The Nay-sayers invariably evoke the ficticious case of the badly behaved one-armed concertina player from a ficticious state in eastern Europe, who is also in a bad mood and plays the only two notes that he knows very loudly in exactly the same spot for four hours or more, without ever pausing for a break. There are several things false in this scenario. Street music is regulated by the most elementary economic forces of the human urban jungle. If one is no good, one collects no money, and if one insists in prolonging this situation for several weeks with absolutely no "income", then one eventaually dies of starvation. Q.E.D. Problem solved. Furthermore, the quite well organised guild for Russian and eastern European musicians seemingly have quite an effective way of dealing with, and even silencing, such musical miscreants in Bonn. Furthermore, literally anybody can demand that any musician moves on after thirty minutes playing in the same spot, whether they are official law enforcers or just members of the general public.
Mere "begging" on the other hand has a long and honourable tradition on the streets of Bonn and if you wish to discover more, please take a stroll with me one evening in the year 1698:

"Begging" even today does not require a permit, but as it always was, is restricted, as it should be, to only the very poorest of people, who have fallen on hard times, often through no fault of their own. A troubadour, who is not begging, but offering a musical service, which benefits and uplifts city life generally, should really be an honoured guest and a source of urban enrichment and should not be punished financially by the city in order to pay off the interest on loans taken out, often misguidedly, by the city in bygone times. Street musicians, have little to fear from being included in any future "wealth tax" introduced by governments in order to fund COVID-19, the Ukrainian war or excessive gas prices. Taxing street musicians is not quite as bad as attempting to tax beggars, but you have my gist?
So, I digress, the folk club on Friday 01.07.22 was a resounding success, being outside, and thus corona free, with adequate distancing, but no formal entrance restriction requirements.
It was very well visited , but it was also notable that those people who had previously, sometimes vehemently, complained that our COVID entrance requirements were excessively strict (like FCB #124 in honour of Steve Perry who has a very reduced immune system) were extremely noticable by their absence, when those entrance restrictions suddenly no longer applied.
As usual I was fortunate in singing "Jock Stewart" just before 22:00 hrs on Friday evening, accompanied by all the wonderful musicians who had performed during the evening. This is a form of simple communal tradition that I know well from England and a tradition that I have gladly brought to Germany with me and enschrined in the tradition of Folk Club Bonn. A song which is sung as a parting glimpse of a wonderful evening, and which featured this time Eva Henneken with a stonking fiddle solo. Even though Detlef was unfortunately not on tap to hand out the lyric sheets, I found that everbody either knew the words or had called them up on their smartphones.
"The times They Are Indeed A-Changing!"
At 10:00 hrs on Saturday morning I was on the piste again in Bad Godesberg being welcomed by Renate and Hubolt outside Bergfeld's Boiladen on the Alte Bahnhofs Straße in Bad Godesberg. As in 2020 Axel Bergfeld has organised a communal group of like minded people to promote music on the streets of Bad Godesberg once again. The heat was hot, as it so often is, but the idea is well worth facilitating and promoting.
So, for local musicians wishing to participate, here are the dates which are still available throughout July:

There is no payment, the payment for the street music permits have already been paid, but you are at liberty to at least earn what you are worth!

almost as expected, we rejoiced too soon about the Corona situation last month. The numbers are going up again. But it's summer and there is longer light in the evenings. Your Folk Club team has therefore decided to hold the upcoming Folk Club outside. The latest COVID-19 variant Omicron 5.0 has its marching boots on and so we are not offering it a running buffet in a musical Petri dish indoors. Many of you will have unfortunately already contracted coronavirus over the last two years. If you have, two things are a racing certainty, you probably did not contract it outdoors, but you invariably contracted it indoors, in confined poorly ventilated spaces with other people who were infected.
Wandering Souls alias Gerrit Witterhold and Lorena Manz from Cologne are unfortunately hindered from attending this evening, but they will be resheduled for the future. The duo Zwei von Zwei with Stephan Weidt and Ulrike Hund from Bonn have announced themselves for the evening. There will also be another opportunity to hear Yawen Liu, who has already enchanted the Folk Club audience several times. But as always, that will not be all. Let us surprise you! In addition there will be Shay McVieh, Eva Henneken, Mario Dompke, Christoph Thiebes and John Harrison

Corona: As the event will take place outdoors and the risk of contagion is thus significantly reduced, we will not be taking any special Corona precautions. However, we appeal to all participants to take a voluntary test beforehand. Please note that the booth outside the entrance to BTHV has now been dismantled and since May no COVID-19 tests have been available on site there. Test centres are still open in Bonn centre and in Bad Godesberg and in Dottendorf and also at many chemists. The COVID-19 "Bürger Tests", the antigen tests are still completely free until the end of June. From July onwards they are still subsidised by the government but will cost only €3 each, the price of a small beer, so certainly worth it for your own peace of mind, and the peace of mind of your fellow folky compatriots,
There is no mandatory rquirement to wear a face mask, either in the building or of course outdoors, but as usual, anyone who feels safer, or even happier, wearing one, is absolutely free to do so. This is your free choice.
No prior registration is required this time.
Seating: There will be beer benches for sitting. If you would like to sit more comfortably, please bring your own seat, or a cushion.
FOOD: In addition to the normal menu in Dotty's Bar there will be an FCB (Folk Club Bonn) FFS (Fast Food Special):

Folk Club Bonn am 01. Juli 2022 - Folk Club wieder unter freiem Himmel

It's not often that we get this much fun indoors!
Folk Club Nr. 124 im Juni 2022 – Zurück zu alten Freuden?
Wie erfreulich: Mit weiter rückläufigen Corona-Zahlen wagt der Folk Club erneut die Rückkehr in den Saal – und das Publikumsinteresse wächst. Gut 50 Freunde des Folk Clubs fanden sich am Abend ein und wurden mit einem abwechslungsreichen Programm belohnt. Der Abend war Steve Perry gewidmet, der fast seit Beginn des Folk Clubs aktiv an der Gestaltung der Abende beteiligt war und seit seiner Erkrankung erstmals seit zwei Jahren wieder an einer Session teilnehmen konnte.
Wie üblich eröffnete John Harrison den Reigen, und spielte wie so oft zusammen mit dem Mundharmonika-Virtuosen Christoph Thiebes. Das Wiegenlied „Summertime“ aus George Gershwins Oper Porgy und Bess scheint wie gemacht für die beiden. John verband das Lied ohne Unterbrechung mit dem Gospel „Motherless Child“ – nette Idee. Johns gesangliche Interpretation der beiden Klassiker ist unnachahmlich, von Christophs Mundharmonika-Künsten ganz zu schweigen. „Stranger Blues" von Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee beschreibt die Lage all derer, für die es schon reicht, in eine andere Stadt zu kommen, und schon sind sie Fremde.
Speziell auf Steve gemünzt war das Lied „Bring Me Flowers While I’m Living“. John hatte sich die Version von Champion Jack Dupree zu eigen gemacht. Wie wahr, und nehmt es euch zu Herzen!
Um das Warten an den stets geschlossenen Bahnschranken in Bonn und insbesondere an der Schranke an der Ollenhauerstraße dreht sich der Text von Holger Riedels Schranken-Blues. „Und wir warten, warten, warten auf den Zug“ lautet eine Zeile. Das ist mal ein Blues, der nicht von „kein Geld“, „keine Freunde“ oder „Frau mit bestem Freund abgehauen“ handelt, sondern von den ganz alltäglichen Sorgen der Menschen in Bonn. Holger beließ es bei der Kurzversion, denn die „Normalversion“ geht naturgemäß so lange, wie man üblicherweise an der Schranke zubringt, und das kann bekanntlich dauern.
John Hay hatte zwei kleine Mutproben mitgebracht, die er aber mit Bravour bewältigte. Bachs Instrumentalmusik ist immer eine Herausforderung, und dass man dabei feuchte Hände kriegen kann, ist sehr verständlich. Viel Applaus gab es für die auf Folk-Club-Format gekürzte „Toccata und Fuge, BWV 565“. Ebenfalls nicht zu verachten ist Isaac Albéniz‘ Stück „Asturias“. Nochmals herzlichen Applaus für John Hay.
Gänsehaut pur gab es von Hans Ihnen: „Heart Of Gold“ von Neil Young ist so einfach und doch so schwierig zugleich und ein wahrer Ohrwurm. Hans‘ Musik kroch förmlich ins Publikum hinein – bitte mehr davon!
Eine besondere Geschichte präsentierte uns John Hurd, der all das versuchte wiederzugeben, was ihm sein Vater über dessen Erlebnisse im Krieg nicht erzählt hatte. Johns Vater mochte über seine Erlebnisse in dieser Zeit einfach nicht reden. Man mag diese Verweigerung verstehen, aber das Problem setzt sich letztlich in den Kindern fort. Wie schön, wenn man es wie John macht und den Verlust musikalisch verarbeitet, als "Jack's Song."
Theo, der bereits vor Jahren regelmäßig im Folk Club auftrat, und dann nach Berlin umzog, war wieder im Lande und machte dem Rheinland gleich eine musikalische Referenz mit Willi Ostermanns „Heimweh nach Köln“. Wir nehmen an, dass er nicht zu Fuß nach Köln und auch nicht nach Bonn gekommen ist, aber singen darf man es, und der Saal sang fleißig mit. Bei „Hallelujah“ von Leonhard Cohen gab es ebenfalls vielstimmige Begleitung. Nochmals viel Gefühl bescherte uns Theo mit Roy Orbinsons „It‘s Over“. Viel Applaus für Theo und seine Lieder.
Standing Ovations gab es für Steve Perry, der krankheitsbedingt und wegen der Corona-Gefahren für zwei Jahre nicht am Folk Club teilgenommen hatte. Auf einen Abstecher vorbeigekommen präsentierte er zusammen mit John Harrison das witzige Lied „On Ilkla Moor baht `at“, auf „richtigem“ Englisch „On Ilkley Moor Without A Hat“. Das Lied gilt so ungefähr als die Hymne von Yorkshire. Es handelt davon, dass jemand, der einer jungen Frau den Hof macht, unvorsichtigerweise ohne Hut ins Moor geht. Dort erkältet er sich logischerweise heftig, er stirbt, er wird begraben und die Würmer machen sich über seine sterblichen Überreste her. Dann kommen die Enten und fressen die Würmer. Hernach jagen wir die Enten, servieren sie und futtern so schließlich um drei Ecken den unglücklich Verstorbenen auf – so geht Recycling! Eine kleine weitere Anekdote um das Lied: Die Melodie stammt gar nicht aus Yorkshire, sondern aus Kent. Sie wurde von einem Schuster aus Canterbury namens Thomas Clark geschrieben, der auch Musiker in seiner Methodistengemeinde war. Damals, Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts, war es die Melodie für eine fromme Hymne. Sie wurde dann aber später vermutlich bei Chorausflügen in die freie Natur für das Scherzlied um den unglücklichen Verliebten umgewidmet. Das vermutet jedenfalls Arnold Kellett, der über das Lied ein Buch geschrieben hat. Schaut euch dazu das Video von Arnold Kellett in Youtube an – sehenswert.
Etwas fürs Herz gab’s danach von Steve in walisischer Sprache: „Ar Hyd Y Nos (Die ganze Nacht)“ ist die – ebenfalls inoffizielle – walisische Hymne. Steve begleitete sich selbst auf seiner Waldzither bei dem Lied, das viele vielleicht in einer englischen Textfassung mit dem Titel „All Through The Night“ kennen.
Steve nutzte vor seinem Abgang noch die Gelegenheit, das Publikum zu ermuntern, Blut zu spenden. Er selbst benötige viele Blutkonserven und wisse um den Mangel an Spenderblut. Immerhin, so Steve, bekomme der Spender Kaffee und Kekse.
Steves Bruder Bill Perry, selbst begeisterter Musiker, war aus Vancouver Island ganz im Westen Kanadas angereist, um Steve zu besuchen. Die Gelegenheit war günstig, im Folk Club einige seiner Lieder zu präsentieren, die überwiegend von der Natur und den Bergen handeln. Steve und sein älterer Bruder waren in ihrer Jugend oft zusammen in den Bergen zum Wandern und Bergsteigen gewesen. „North Appalachian“ ist eines seiner Lieder zum Thema. Mit „Rabbit In A Log“ spielte er ein bekanntes „Bluegrass“ Stück mit einigen eigenen witzigen Ergänzungen. Viel Applaus für Bill!
Ganz auf Steve waren die Stücke gemünzt, die die Gruppe um Mario Dompke mit Manfred Möhlich, Uta Schäfer und Sonja vortrug. „Steve’s Polka“ aus Marios Feder ist ein hübsches, kleines Instrumental für Gitarren und Bouzouki. Vielfach von Steve vorgetragen und jetzt von der Gruppe, die sich auch Fomiander (Folk, Mittelalter und andere schöne Lieder) nennt, gespielt ist „Dim Lights, Thick Smoke And Loud, Loud Music“. Das ist ein echter Country-Klassiker, mit einem Text, der nur so von „traditionellen Werten“ des ländlichen Amerika trieft – schaurig schön! Nochmal schönen Schmalz gab es mit dem Lied „Village Lanterne“ von Blackmore’s Night. Sonja konnte mit ihrer schönen Stimme glänzen.
Den Abschluss ihres Auftritts machte Fomiander mit dem von Sonja geschriebenen Lied „Vollmondnacht“.
Auch John Harrison hatte noch einige Schmankerl auf Lager: Zusammen mit Franz-Josef Hunsänger sang er das witzige Lied vom verliebten Nilpferd, dem der Schlamm so behagt. Ein köstlicher Spaß von Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. „Mud, mud, glorious mud, nothing quite like it for cooling the blood” lautet eine Zeile aus dem „Hippopotamus Song“ über das verliebte Nilpferd.
Natürlich darf auch ein Gedicht nicht fehlen. „For Whom The Bell Tolls“ von John Donne ermahnt uns, dass wir als Menschen voneinander abhängig sind und dies immer berücksichtigen sollten.
Nach dem ernsten Intervall ging es wieder in die Komödienecke. Zusammen mit Elena führte John die kleine, in Gedichtform verpackte Geschichte vom Missverständnis zwischen der Frau des Pfandleihers und dem Bibliothekar vor. „The Librarian’s Lament“ beruht auf einem Wortspiel, das nur auf Englisch funktioniert. Der Pfandleiher heißt auf Englisch „pawnbroker“, und die Dame suchte zu dem Gewerbe Literatur, damit sich ihr Mann weiterbilden kann: „pawnography“. Da das aber genauso ausgesprochen wird wie „pornography“, könnt ihr euch den Rest des Wortverwechselungsspiels denken. Die Geschichte wurde von John Conolly, einem Bibliothekar aus dem nordenglischen Fischerort Grimsby verfasst. Offenbar hatte er viel Zeit und Fantasie, sich solche witzigen Geschichten auszudenken.
Erstmals seit Jahren trat auch Karin Schüler wieder im Folk Club auf. Bei dem schwungvollen Lied der französischen Sängerin Zaz „Qué vendrá“, dessen Text teils französisch und teils spanisch ist, begleitete sie sich auf dem Klavier. Dabei wurden wir daran erinnert, dass wir einmal wieder den Klavierstimmer kommen lassen müssten.
Zum Ende des Abends spielte „Fliege“ alias Hermann-Josef Wolf dem Publikum noch einen Rembetiko aus Kreta auf seiner irischer Bouzouki.
Aber wie immer ging der abwechslungsreiche und kurzweilige Abend nicht zu Ende ohne die Hymne auf unseren Schutzpatron Jock Stewart „A man you don’t meet every day“.

fast wie erwartet haben wir uns im letzten Monat zu früh über die Corona-Situation gefreut. Die Zahlen steigen wieder an. Aber es ist Sommer und es wird abends länger hell. Euer Folk-Club-Team hat daher beschlossen, den kommenden Folk-Club im Freien abzuhalten. Die neueste COVID-19-Variante Omikron 5.0 hat ihre Marschstiefel an und so bieten wir ihr nicht in einer musikalischen Petrischale drinnen ein laufendes Buffet. Viele von Ihnen werden sich in den letzten zwei Jahren leider schon mit dem Coronavirus angesteckt haben. Wenn Sie sich angesteckt haben, sind zwei Dinge sicher: Sie haben sich wahrscheinlich nicht im Freien angesteckt, sondern ausnahmslos in geschlossenen, schlecht belüfteten Räumen mit anderen infizierten Menschen.
Für den Abend haben sich Wandering Souls alias Gerrit Witterhold und Lorena Manz aus Köln und das Duo Zwei von Zwei mit Stephan Weidt und Ulrike Hund aus Bonn angekündigt. Außerdem wird es eine weitere Gelegenheit geben, Yawen Liu zu hören, die das Folk Club-Publikum schon mehrfach verzaubert hat. Aber wie immer wird das nicht alles sein. Lassen Sie sich überraschen!

Wir appellieren jedoch an alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer, sich vor der Veranstaltung einem freiwilligen Test zu unterziehen. Bitte beachten Sie, dass der Stand vor dem Eingang der BTHV inzwischen abgebaut wurde und seit Mai keine COVID-19-Tests mehr vor Ort angeboten werden. In der Bonner Innenstadt, in Bad Godesberg und in Dottendorf sowie in vielen Apotheken sind die Testzentren weiterhin geöffnet. Ab Juli werden sie weiterhin vom Staat subventioniert, kosten aber nur noch 3 € pro Stück, was dem Preis eines kleinen Bieres entspricht und sich für Ihren eigenen Seelenfrieden und den Seelenfrieden Ihrer volkstümlichen Mitbürger sicherlich lohnt.
Das Tragen einer Gesichtsmaske ist nicht vorgeschrieben, weder im Gebäude noch im Freien, aber wie immer, steht es jedem frei, eine solche zu tragen, wenn er sich damit sicherer oder sogar glücklicher fühlt. Dies ist Ihre freie Entscheidung.
Eine vorherige Anmeldung ist dieses Mal nicht erforderlich.
Sitzgelegenheiten: Es wird Bierbänke zum Sitzen geben. Wenn Sie bequemer sitzen möchten, bringen Sie bitte Ihre eigene Sitzgelegenheit oder ein Kissen mit.
Essen: Zusätzlich zur normalen Speisekarte in Dotty's Bar wird es ein FCB (Folk Club Bonn) FFS (Fast Food Special) geben:
Bockwurst mit Senf € 3,50 und
Bockwurst mit Kartoffelsalat € 6,00
so dass auch hungrige Folkies gesättigt werden.
Die Wettervorhersage ist für Freitagnachmittag und -abend sehr günstig, also drücken wir die Daumen, und ich werde, wie immer, ein gutes Wort beim Grünen Mann einlegen!

John Hurd of 3SongsBonn was also "working" on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, without "double time" as he joined all these busy tree guardians and musicians in their "labours of love". Such labours of love performed by the above are also "labours" and nothing less than the trees deserve who "labour tirelessly for us 24/7 to make life on planet earth much more comfortable for us humans. Thank you all for your selfless altruistic "labours" and thanks to the many people who attended on a wonderful sunny Sunday afternoon, with 25 o C and not even a mere hint of precipitation.
